ECG’s Approved Standard Testing Contractors Are Exorbitantly Charging Whatever They Want | Can’t There Be Fixed Charges to Control Customer Exploitation?

If you thought the old system of obtaining an Electricity Company of Ghana, (ECG) meter was burdensome, then wait till you get to read this.

Apparently, ECG has issued a new directive that before you qualify to get a new meter, a customers’ electrical installation and maintenance should be carried out by licensed electrical contractors to establish if the electrical wiring and placements meet a specific standard.

We think this is in the right directon , but there are no approved charges for this services the contractors offer and so they are taking advantage of this to squeeze as much money as they can out of the customers.

Below is an unedited mail we received from S. Mohammed, telling us about her experience with these so called contractors.

Hello Chris,

I am m very sad about how ECG meters are procured now. We thought the old system was frustrating but this is worse.

Now ECG is working with some electrical guys who will come and check the place out and make sure your wires and any other thing is correct which is good.

The sad part is, there is nothing like payment types from ECG. Example: single room (xxx amount) one floor (xxx amount) so at least you know how much you will pay when they come to do the survey.

I have called 2 people to come and I got the contacts from ECG to check my single room and give me their stamped document for me to get a meter. And they charge a 1000 ghc for a single room to give you a stamp document.

If you ask why that much for a single room the response you get is; “if we knew it was a single room we won’t have come because we won’t get any money.”

A commodity I am suppose to enjoy as a Ghanaian is now been denied by middle men because ECG gave them some right. The energy commission should come clear on this and give us fix rates cos the middle men they introduced are killing us.

We can’t enjoy our own share of the national cake?

We are waiting to see if they will have anything reasonable to say to this…

About CustomerDiscuss.Com:

Customer service in Ghana and most parts of Africa is the crappiest we’ve ever come across; as if Ghanaians or Africans use mango leaves to pay for services. The broadband never works, the electricity is never on, the water never flows—and the waitress can keep you waiting for your food until hunger kills your buds.

The real pain is, you have no alternative to turn to—because, like a gang of fools, they are all the same.

Almost every service and product delivering company in Africa has it butt in the faces of customers, farting uncontrollably because the customer cannot really do anything.  Mostly, if you quietly complain, they do nothing and if you are unlucky, they tell you to go f**k off.

Consumers have no voice, not even individual voices—let alone a collective one to force any sort of change.

So we’ve started this website-CustomerDiscuss.Com[3], supported by GhanaCelebrities.Com[4] and other platforms, dedicated to corporate and public Africa, especially Ghana—-it’s time we shame some of these companies, tear down their lousy services, help them to lose customers and force them to do what’s right.

We are not here to destroy people’s businesses, rather we cant to force things to be changed—so those businesses which offer great customer service will be duly acknowledged and commended.

If you have a complaint about your telecom company, internet provider, a restaurant, your bank or even your church, shoot an email to us via; [email protected] or call/whatsapp 00447961817712.

When you go to a restaurant and you are served in a broken plate or on a dirty table, just take some photos and send them to us with the needed details.

Together, we can get these people to be accountable and importantly, do what’s expected of them.
